Astragalus Tincture or decoction? Empty Astragalus Tincture or decoction?

Post by Inti March 22nd 2008, 1:50 am

As per Richo's instruction I made a strong decoction of astragalus and preserved it in 20% ETOH. He said tincturing doesn't do it well. But for some reason I feel it's not great.. kinda watery. I thought i decocted a strong batch but maybe not.

Anyone have experience with this? and any suggestions?

How strong a decoction would you use?

thnx

I have had the same question, and so have not done anything with the dried root I have. It's still sitting there. But, Richo is the only author from the resources I have read who actually says that decoction is better than tincture. David, Michael Moore, Sharon Tilgner in Herbal Medicine from the Heart of the Earth, and David Winston in Adaptogens all mention both a tincture and decoction dosage, as do the websites I researched online. Most of the websites leaned toward decoction as the traditional method, in teas and soups. One site said that a strong decoction would be 1 oz. dried root per cup of water. So...I still haven't decided what to do with mine...

I don't think my decoction was that strong. i'll try that. Maybe I tincture some as well and use the tincture as the alcohol preservative for the ecoction.

Herb Pharm and Gaia both do a tincture with an ETOH of between 30-40%.
