the politics of candida
have we all been briefed on candida?
i remember a lecture from Gail on the topic... which i couldn't find in my notes. i was inspired to do some research the other night when a friend suggested that it could be the culprit behind many of the things that have been going on with me. the web turned up a plethora of banter coupled with questionable intentions - examples of how herbal treatment for profit tends to loose the plot. there are countless websites and regimines and blends and pills and creams from many a 'doctor' or even 'candida therapist' droning on with suggestions that candida can cause and be caused by, well, just about everything. though the sales strategy is wuite effective and time-honored;make them afraid and they will buy.
it had me longing to hear david go off on one of his tangents on the politics of herbs.
it seems that the underlying thought pattern behind the candida issue closely resembles that of the 'cleanse' concept that currently plagues the natural health field. 'your body is dirty and must be cleaned, purged, prodded and treated, but don't trust your body to take a little bit a long way and to keep itself in balance.'
we tend to look at the earth this way as well, easily becoming cockey enough to believe that we, these little humans can really just shatter her every function so far out of whack that she cant regain herself whenever she sees fit. remember david talking about the plants pushing their way up through the city sidewalks as a reminder - 'i'm in charge here, bitch.'
i could go out and buy the sometimes $300 candida cleanse kit (ha) thinking, 'oh yea, i'm on top of this, gonna get that candida'... or, i could make some dietary changes (like cut out candida-feeding foods, ie. sugars and carbs) while taking a good quality probiotic blend and a bit of oregano tincture each day (one of the most highly recommended herbs for candida excess) and observe my body. i'll opt for the later. i trust my body to balance herself, and with constant awareness of her needs and my facilitation of balance with herbs and supplements, i think she can handle it. might take some time. but, i think this is the true way of natural medicine; to slow down, observe, and trust.
