This recipe comes from Ayurvedic doctor, Dr. Vasant Lad. For those interested he is pretty much the main guy. He has an insititute in New Mexico. My mom's went there to do his detox program. Candis Cantin studied with him years ago.

Ingredients

1 cup Mung Dal (split yellow lentals)
1/2 cp Basmati rice, white
6 cps water
1/2-1 inch Ginger root
2 tsp Ghee
1/2 tsp Tumeric
1/2 tsp Coriander Powder
1/2 tsp Cumin Powder
1/2 tsp Whole Cumin seeds
1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
1/4 tsp Mineral salt
1 pinch Asafoetida (Hing) (I have no idea what this is)
Handful Fresh cilantro leaves
1 1/2 cps Assorted Vegetable (optional)

Preparation

Carefully pick over the rice and dal to remove any stones. Wash in at least 2 changes of water. Ad the 6 cups of water to teh riceand dal and cook covered until soft. Ad the vegetables and cook 10 minutes longer.

In a separate saucepan, saute the freshh ginger root, mustard seeds, whole cumin seeds, hing, cumin powder, coriander powder and tumeric together with the ghee. Stir the sauteed spices into the dal and rice mixture. Add mineral salt and fresh cilantro and serve.

Options
Use vegies such as zucchini, asparagus or sweet potato, cut into pieces

The portions of rice to dal can be reversed

The spices can be prepared with the dal

The rice can be prepared separately from the dal. the ratio of rice to water is 1:2 and the dal is 1:3

For Vata and Kapha conditions: add a oinch of ginger powder
For Pitta: Leave out the mustard seeds

Enjoy!!

Hey Mademoiselle,
i guess I gave the impression that she was ill. But she's not. She was going for a detox program for general good health. Guess I should reword that

Here' you've been laid up with a few illness yourself. Sorry to hear that. Some pretty nasty things have been going around. I'm blessed I've kept them at bay knowing my track record. All thanks to the herbs.
